Independent Retailers Feeling The Effects of Amazon

Amazon is hurting the overwhelming majority independent retailers in the US, a new survey conducted by the Institute for Local Self Reliance (ILSR) has found.

In the survey carried out by the ILSR for the Advocates for Independent Business – a coalition of independent business trade associations that includes office products dealer group TriMega – 90% of the more than 850 respondents said that Amazon had had a negative impact on their business, while almost 30% said that this impact was “significant”.

While many independents are developing their own online and omnichannel strategies, research suggests that most online shoppers are starting their product searches on Amazon, making it difficult for smaller resellers to grab a share of e-commerce spending outside the Amazon ecosystem.

Despite this, independent retailers said that they were weathering the storm better than national retail chains. Reasons for this included the levels of personal service, being closer to local communities and product expertise.

However, the survey threw up dissatisfaction with local media coverage which tends to focus on the national chains and Amazon. There was also a message for community leaders and elected officials to better support their local business communities.

More details and a link to the full report can be found on the ILSR website.
